I'm doing the money scratch as well. I gulp buried 99000 bells - I swear if that tree doesn't pay off I'm never trying it again. Grrr. At least w/ the glowing spots in the game cube version you'd definitely get a good tree.
Also, I am officially disgruntled about these %&$(^%^#$ "Bright Nights" - didn't see Joan today at all. Grrr again.

Did this ever work for you?

I buried 99,000 bells, and got a tree. It bloomed with three bags of bells, worth 30,000 each. And never bloomed again. Greedy little me was hoping for a repeating tree.
I suppose if you bury 10K and get a 30K (3 bags of 10) return it'd be ok. Or even a 90K return (3 bags of 30) - but I think the odds are against you.

Supposedly the more bells you bury, the more likely it'll be a money tree. But I don't think they ever produce bells more than once. Bummer.
